SUMMARY:ERTRAC Road Safety R&I Workshop: from Challenges to Solutions – the Way forward
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is organized in the framework of the FUTURE-RADAR project. \nThis workshop is listed as a pre-event of the 3rd Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety\, which will take place in Stockholm on 19-20 February 2020. \nAfter decades of great improvements\, the EU has entered into a phase of stagnation in its efforts to make European roads safer. Since 2013\, fatality and injury figures have remained nearly constant. A continuation at the current level of ca. 25\,000 road fatalities and ca. 1.4 million injuries on European roads per year is fully unacceptable and in conflict with important road safety targets of the EU\, such as moving close to zero fatalities by 2050. Cooperative\, connected and automated road transport shows the potential to enable substantial reductions in collisions on European roads\, while its successful introduction involves many safety challenges\, as well. At the same time\, the strive to decarbonize road transport\, reduce congestion and further improve air quality\, as well as public health\, pushes the shift towards other modes of transport than private cars\, which do not necessarily offer the same level of safety. \nWhat is the European Commission’s perception of the safety situation on European roads? What is European R&I contributing to making our roads safer? Which safety research is needed in the coming years to overcome the challenges ahead of us and cover remaining “white spots”? How can a good coverage of road safety R&I needs to be ensured in Horizon Europe? These are just some of the questions that will be discussed at this Road Safety Workshop\, organized by the Working Group Road Transport Safety & Security of ERTRAC\, the European Road Transport Research Advisory Council. \nThe workshop will bring the research and industry community together with representatives of the European Commission and road user associations. Through a fruitful dialogue\, the aim is to identify how R&I can best help to put the EU back on track towards Vision Zero\, meaning a road transport system in which human life is the paramount concern and no-one is killed or severely injured anymore. \n  \n\n\n\nAgenda \n10:00 Welcome & introduction to the day\nJean-François Aguinaga\, Head of Unit Future Urban & Mobility Systems\, DG R&I & Peter\n         Urban\, ika \n10:10 Road safety: How is Europe doing?\nFotini Ioannidou\, Head of Unit Road Safety\, DG MOVE \n\n\n\n\n10:30 Success stories from completed R&I projects \nLarge scale collection and analysis of traffic\, vehicle and driver data in Europe: How has this increased traffic safety?\nMagnus Granström\, SAFER \nAutonomous Emergency Braking (AEB): From ERTRAC roadmap to Euro NCAP rated systems\nSjef van Montfort\, TNO\n \nImproving VRU safety by addressing barriers of current AEB systems\nNùria Parera\, IDIADA \nThe long-term perspective: Impacts of VRU safety research in the APROSYS project\nMichael Hamacher\, fka GmbH \nInfrastructural measures to improve safety at road-rail intersections: SAFER-LC\nAnnika Dressler\, DLR \n12:30 Lunch \n13:30 Future road safety research needs in the context of CCAM and beyond\nMagnus Granström\, SAFER & Peter Urban\, ika \n14:00 Introduction to Horizon Europe\nJean-François Aguinaga\, Head of Unit Future Urban & Mobility Systems\, DG R&I \n14:20 How to ensure a good coverage of road safety R&I needs in Horizon Europe?\nModerated discussion \n15:30 Wrap-up and closing \n\n\n\n  \nRegistration \nThe registration for this workshop is now possible and open until November 10th\, 2019.
